What are you doing, Cristiano Giuntoli?
Andrea Cambiaso out, Lloyd Kelly in?! The plot has been lost.
I sat down, freshly brewed espresso in hand, and checked my phone. I’d received a message from a fellow Newcastle-supporting friend. It was a screenshot of some news being reported by Fabrizio Romano. Juventus were making a move for Lloyd Kelly, the man Eddie Howe brought in for free to Newcastle after they spent time at Bournemouth together. I nearly spat out my coffee.
This transfer window is crucial for Juventus because they currently (at the time of writing this) sit in 5th place with 13 draws after 21 games, leading to Thiago Motta’s job being questioned. It was not the fairytale arrival Motta had hoped for since departing Bologna and leaving the fantastic work he had done there behind. Dusan Vlahovic is not firing in this system, which is why he’s currently linked with a move away from the club. Danilo is leaving on a free, despite Juve’s centre-back concerns. Douglas Luiz’s time at Juventus hasn’t been what they’d have hoped for, raising question marks on why they signed him in the first place. He’s also linked with a move away.
However, these transfers aren’t the ones concerning me as a neutral fan of the league. It’s the potential departure of Andrea Cambiaso to Manchester City. A tumultuous season so far, at best, for Juventus and Cambiaso is one of the few bright sparks in this system alongside Kenan Yildiz and, surprisingly, Weston McKennie.
I’m not silly, despite what others may tell you. €65million is a large fee, especially for a club in need of improving its finances. But Juve are in a predicament where they may not qualify for the UEFA Champions League, which is a horrendous situation to be in for the biggest team in the country. Cambiaso is one of the only players proving they work in Thiago Motta’s system and the club are considering selling him halfway through the season.
It’s a huge move for the player, though. A dream Premier League transfer to recent treble winners, Manchester City to play under Pep Guardiola. From Cambiaso’s perspective, how do you turn that down?
The window continues to get worse for Juventus, too, because they’re looking to bolster their centre-back department with Lloyd Kelly of Newcastle, who are asking for € 30 million for the English defender. If Juve do sign Kelly, then Newcastle should be laughing all the way to the bank with that kind of money being paid for a, at best, Championship centre-back.
Juventus fans, you should be praying Giuntoli and co go for Fikayo Tomori or Ronald Araujo, who they’ve been pursuing, too. Kelly isn’t the answer.
